Part installation, part performance art, “Grave Era” consists of six specially sculpted fake gravestones from Victorian New Zealand (purportedly remnants of a forgotten lost Cemetery). They are curated by the slightly daft Dr. Otto Harpuka, Professor of Post Modern Archaeology, who tells the extraordinary stories of the deceased persons’ life and death. Although completely fictitious, the anecdotes are based on NZ social history.
Winner of the Dunedin Fringe Festival 2008 Outdoor Performance award. These photos are from the Hamilton “Ignition” Fringe Festival 2008. For each show several local stories were incorporated, and the event generated considerable public interest and media coverage.
